Farmer Kitty, I would be honored to donate a good photo of a real Simmental for your Breeds page.
I would be honored to have a good photo of a real Simmental for the breeds page.

I will also check out the link you have provided and if it's as good as you are saying I will add it. :)

BTW-check out the index in my sig. It has links to a lot of the info threads.

CowCop, that is the same link as kstaven's and it's on the Breed page. That is where this line at the bottom, Here's another one that tells about Breeds of Cattle Info , takes you.

I've got a breed page up. Please look it over and tell me of any breeds that you can think of that I missed or any suggestions of things to add.

What happened to the breeds page?!
No idea, but I think since the original poster is no longer active, they didn't want to have the breed page up any more. Check out the links on cattle breeds that I posted in the previous posts.

I'm working on a database of cattle information, but I am also relatively new to cattle, so a little help would be appreciated. The links provided in this thread are a good start, but contain little detailed production information or environmental information.

I plan to list each breed and its purpose (beef, dairy, or dual). I then plan to include more detailed production information.

Diary/Dual:
Volume of Milk Produced
Butterfat Content of Milk

Are there other considerations that should be considered in purchasing a dairy cow?

Beef/Dual:
??

What do meat producers look for? I've seen bits here and there about marbling. If you were interested in researching cows for beef production, what information would you want to know?

I also plan to include the type of feeds each breed needs. For example, Milking Devons can produce on course forage while some cattle breeds require grain feed. I also hope to find the climates for which each breed is best suited.

If you can direct me to some links or other resources where I can expect to find more detailed production information, that would be wonderful. I plan to upload the database to Google Docs where I can allow access to it from the BYH forums.

Check out my page on different breeds that I've put up a while ago: http://www.backyardherds.com/web/viewblog.php?id=236 The chart probably has most of the stuff that you need to have according to what you are looking for for each breed. I know the chart doesn't have EVERY breed on your list, but it should have most. It includes both dairy (in blue) and beef (in red) cattle. The ones in black are the ones that are not popular, at least for my area.

BTW you have a great plan. But it certainly sounds like something that would require quite a bit of research, so good luck with it. :)
