I carried a bucket of water to them this morning. Buford was wanting attention, so I ignored him and heaped attention on Sheba. He butted in, I roared at him, arms up, advancing, he scrambled backwards, grinning. We did this several times, then Sheba snarled up at him too. Buford ran to Sentry, groveling, Sentry snarled and trashed Buford. No love for Buford!

I made a big show of heaping praises on Sheba, then Sentry. Then I turned to Buford, SIT! He did and I heaped praises on him.

It’s so funny to watch, when I roar and growl at Buford, Sheba and Sentry do too.

Little granddaughters are here for the week. The youngest has a cheetah suit and loves to wear it. Because of the heat, I bring Sentry inside, he goes in a dog crate. I put Buford and Sheba in the front yard, they go under the porch where it is cool.

The youngest wanted to go out on the porch to pet Buford. Sure! Buford hopped up on the porch, happy to come see us. He took one look at her, stopped dead in his tracks, scared! Where was his little girl? This thing didn’t even have hands! It had PAWS! And a long TAIL! AACCKKKK! He jumped off the porch, barking at this strange creature that knew his name!

I had her stand still, take one hand out of the paw and called him to me. He carefully sniffed the paws, giving them a good going over. He sniffed her all over. I held the tail out and he sniffed it up and down. Finally satisfied that it was indeed his little girl, he relaxed and she could pet and hug him. It was so funny!

It’s a gorgeous morning. I slept late, talked to @farmerjan on the phone and finally we both just had to shut up and get off the phone. LOL

I blocked off part of the driveway so the ewe crew could graze it. It’s not much, but it’s more grass than they’ve had in 6 weeks. They are happy to have what little there is.

It’s been so hot that I haven’t spent much quality time with the dogs. So I took a chair out to their shade tree. Buford was so excited, butting in between me and Sheba and Sentry, nibbling on me. I have observed Sheba gnawing on Buford’s head and growling fiercely, to reprimand him. So I took a page out of her book, grabbed the sides of his mouth, twisting and growling. He let out a small squeal and I let go. If he could sit still for a few seconds, I praised him. Then right back to being an obnoxious puppy, in a big body. I repeated it, making him let out a little squeal, over and over, praising when he’d sit still for a moment. Sheba helped by biting his face and growling.

Finally he settled down.Sentry was napping, Sheba was relaxed, Buford was laying in a hole. He decided he ought to check on me, came and laid down by me. I petted him. He lay there quietly.

I love you Mom!

And finally he was content that I was ok and went back to lay against the tree and its shade.

Buford is a big dog, but still a puppy, exuberant over everything, chasing grasshoppers, nearly knocking me down, annoying the other dogs, but we are making progress. A little bit at a time.

We have finally had a few rains and cooler weather. The grass greened up enough to give the sheep limited grazing. Buford did not have sheep lessons for 2 months. I let them out for a couple of hours at a time. The ewe crew was so happy, they ran, bounced in the air and grazed.
Buford did not chase.
I’ve let them out on the field for longer periods and Buford has done great. A few times he tried to herd them together, they moved away and he followed. I called him down before it turned into a chase, other than that, he’s been darn near perfect!

He left the shade tree a while ago, went out among the flock and laid down. He stretched out to take a nap, the ewes grazed away, then grazed back towards him. It’s a peaceful scene.

Good boy Buford.
