So, I've just been all weepy from gratitude for the past couple days.

My friend Carmen - helped me get into chickens, taught me to can, encouraged me through all the cow ups & downs, taught me to process chickens & to make bread, helped me build a safe & secure pen for Birdie, helped me out while I was out of work AND helped me get on with this company - Friday morning was her last day working here.
I was waiting for her to call & let me know that she was done & heading to Lowe's so we could meet up & look at washers when she pulled into the driveway with a new washer in the back of her truck.!!!! 🥹
She's just one of those people. 🥰
I'm going to miss her terribly here.
:hugs

It's been a looong week. I haven't seen Eva in daylight since Tues.
I had a 'train the trainer' class after working Wed night. Then picked up 2 day shifts with my old crew to do a changeover.
Two things happened this week. Funny? Scary? Notable at least.

1. I was scheduled to work Thurs night but because of the 8-12 class Thurs AM, I skipped Thurs night & picked up Fri. day instead. I neglected to tell Dad about the change. I came home after a 17hr shift & crashed. 6:30 that night he sees my car & calls to find out why I'm home. I didn't hear it ring. I woke up to him standing at the foot of my bed saying 'Debbie, you ok?'.
... whole new level of sleep trauma unlocked. 😱💀 I might never sleep deeply again.
At least he worries about me.... right?

2. My old supervisor told me that he's thinking of putting in for Carmen's old job but he's worried about leaving A shift w/o a supervisor. Then he said that the only person in the department that he would recommend to fill the spot was me. 😳
I think I could do it for A shift... and C shift - both full of cool guys who just want to do the job, get along & go home safe. But eventually I'd have to cover other shifts for vaca & such and B shift (the 'inmates') and D shift (my current 'resents the whole world' coworker) would be a big problem.

Today has been a sofa & coffee & movies morning. Time to get showered & start the days checklist.

So far she has ZERO signs. Rump clean, currently laying in the sun chewing cud.

GUESS WHAT I JUST FOUND!!!!!!
A BUTCHER that will come to the farm, do the kill, then haul back for processing! 🤗 It's more expensive, naturally, but I've always HATED that I put so much effort into trying to give the beef calves a great life & then their last day is filled with stress & fear. Plus..... the hassle of trying to find someone willing to trailer .... when I need trailering done is partly how Blossom got to be 2yrs old before leaving.
The lady that answered the phone laughed when I told her it would be about 2yrs. She said 'Um, how about you let us know around 2 MONTHS in advance?' 😅

So, Eva is knocked up?
:duc
1 more day before I'm comfortable calling it 'confirmed'...... but I'm very very hopeful.

With cattle being such a common livestock.... and the margin between cost & profit so thin.... and almost all operations depending on confirming successful breeding in a timely manner.... why isn't there a cheap, easy, cow-side pregnancy test? Come On EPT! Help a farmHer out!
