Iā€™ll suit up in 18 layers of clothing after while and go outside to do chores.
Yesterday a friend 30 miles away offered to bring me a heater for a water trough. What a kind offer! They are from Canada, so our ā€œhorrible ā€œ freeze is nothing to them. I turned it down, explaining that we are idiots on icy roads and the chances of him getting here and back without getting in a wreck were slim to none. Plus no electricity at my pens.

The sheriff was out, warning everyone to stay home and even closed some roads. He featured several wrecks on his FB page, one an 18 wheeler.

I have a big trough float heater for the 150 gal trough...plus several of the 30 ish heated tubs. While they're sure helpful, the bill can be hurtful. BUT the years we have cold for several days, or a couple weeks šŸ˜– that give me thick ice, it's worth the cost. Almost all were bought on sale!! Another thing, sometimes I run them only at night....if daytime above freezing temps.

Checking in from a cold Colorado. Already up to 5 this morning, warmer than it has been the past three days. Not completely bundled up, itā€™s supposed to warm up to like 30 today. Glad work is inside, but just hoping they keep the doors closed still.
Working both cow shows and rodeos now, there was a wreck yesterday in the rodeo that can only be described as absolutely horrible. Iā€™ve seen bad wrecks, and this bareback wreck was something else. Iā€™m helping a friend and feeding a couple sheep here, and I was definitely glad to go feed for a second afterwards just to catch my breath.
Headed in for another long day, stay warm yā€™all.

Morning everyone!
I DID A THING YESTERDAY and in my defense I have to say I was left alone, unattended and unsupervised for way too long. Not good for both FH and I while we are trying to stay eating healthy. Speaking of FH he is still out salting the roads to make sure they are safe for careless reckless drivers. Right now the temp here is 32. FH had to go brine the roads on Sunday so we had to rearrange scheduled appointments and use a raincheck on lunch with friends and didn't get home till late then he had to go back yesterday AM to be in plow truck,

All my chicken pens have 1.5 gallon heated dog water dishes. But they just canā€™t keep up with this cold. The 1st two days I only had to chisel and break about 2ā€ of ice on them to get down to the water. Then refill with warm water from the house. But yesterday they were all frozen solid. :( So I had to chisel out little hollows in each one an pour the warm water over the ice. That was good for them all to at least get one drink.

One pen door has been solidly frozen shut for 3 days now and I couldnā€™t get in to give that group any water. Yesterday I finally just cut the wire near the water dish and made a hole to crawl in through and chiseled an ice bowl for them. They all crowded around and drank their fill. Then I put a wire dog crate up against the hole I made to keep them in (and hopefully safe) until the weather warms up and I can repair the hole.

Things will be better tomorrow when it warms up to the 20s. Then next week it will go into the 40s and this will become a distant memory. Like the big freeze of Christmas 2022.

Good morning all. Thanks for the coffee. I guess the outlet for the water trough heater and the dog bowl quit. I checked the plug and it looked ok. Maybe it was just a little unplugged :fl . A little colder than I thought yesterday that it would be this morning. -10 for a start today, -22 wind chill now. We "camped" last night in the living room, tent and all. It would've been warmer sitting on the couch, futon or for me and the wife just using our bed. The living room may be the warmest room, but the floor is still cold. I got up at 12:30 and threw some more wood in the stove. The thermometer next to the stove read 60 this morning 5' up. The kids had fun though. Currently colder here than Polka's CO. But that warm up is heading this way.

A little late now but would some salt thaw out the door way and whatever spills hopefully could keep the walkway clear. Or it may melt the snow and make a mudhole in front of the door.

Weā€™re off a low of 9 then on to upper 20ā€™s. Windy so the ewes are doing a lava lamp stroll between the barn and a round bale. Lost twin lambs out of an iffy mom, thought they were off to a good start. Tonight is the last bitter night. Water frozen to the kitchen sink but ok in the rest of the house. That side is getting sun now so hopefully water is back soon, if that is where the problem is. Generator install tomorrow but I donā€™t know if the hose is going to be available. Stay warm everyone. For all the PIA this has been we dodged a bullet with the predicted ice not happening.

Sorry about the lambs.šŸ˜žšŸ«‚

My 15 above is just SO, SO menial compare to what you guys out west are dealing with!! šŸ„¶šŸ„¶ I shouldn't complain.šŸ„“šŸ¤ It's also WHY I live here ā¤ļøšŸ˜ I can't even imagine -22 šŸ˜±šŸ„¶

It's really concerning that there are people out there who can't get warm -- old & young. Can't carry wood, pay electric, propane, whatever. That's really sad & something I wish we could resolve. šŸ„¹
