Whatta day. Horrible electrical storm at 3a, ushered in by equally horrible wind. Heard an assortment of bangs and crashes outside (which amounted to almost nothing). Generator disabled due to regulator not working so lights out. “Propane Lil” our fearless propane tech arrived (out of the blue) with a new regulator and did repairs. Generator working now. The garage fuse blew (storm) leaving me with a freezer full of meat in jeopardy. I found an outdoor electrical cord with an illegible tag, assumed it would be safe because it’s diameter is larger than the freezer’s cord, plugged the freezer into an exterior outlet. So far all is well. I vetted all this on the phone with my brother as Hubbs is working in another part of the state and unavailable. While walking fence for repairs I found a freshly killed, full grown ewe, head badly gnawed. She was about 10 feet other side of the fence in heavy brush. Thinking big cat. Or vacationing sea monster, these days who knows? Also unmovable limb on fence so closed that pasture. My favorite apple treeling was snapped off at ground level dammit. But a bantam hen hatched six+- chicks. Got them fed watered. Wonder what got that ewe? Hope tomorrow has less weather and mystery
Freezers might pull 10A at max, a 16 gauge cord which is smallest one might find for extension cord if under 50 feet would handle it no problem up to 13A.

@Weldman feel free to add any electrical advice!
I need to put a hotline number on here 🤣
All extension cords have a number followed by AWG and then the metric measurement with their rating stamped in the sheathing if worthy of anything followed by their ratings of such as SEOOW Service, Elastomeric, Oil resistant insulation and jacket, Water/weather resistant.

AWG America Wire Gauge 18, 16, 12 etc etc etc down to 0 for then it goes to 00 which a 0 is called an aught, two 0’s is double aught then goes to kcmil such as 250, 262 350. Should I keep going?

No. Many thanks however. If you ever need to know the difference between a Monet and a Manet I’m your gal  A person can also sing most Emily Dickinson poems to the tune of the Yellow Rose of Texas. Liberal arts education, ugh.

Service Junior Thermoplastic Weather resistant @76°C it will start to melt, a 12AWG will take as much as your breaker will take if in accordance with NEC's of 20A or less breaker for household receptacles.
Manet would of been me if I were a painter.

Everything looks ok. While that 12 AWG looks low the cord is on an outlet that nothing else is using. Nothing is hot or odd or smelly or sparking. Weather is clear and mild. I will get up and check, checking sheep anyway. I think Sally will ride okay. Thanks again to Weldman.

You're welcome.
Alright let me rephrase this, 12 gauge wire is like 12 gauge steel, thicker and bigger than 14 gauge, 16 gauge would be smaller than 14 gauge and it keeps going.

American Wire Gauge was originally based on how many passes thru a drawing guide it took to make the wire that small. You can only stretch out / thin wire so far in one step without breaking it.

I tend to visualize AWG the same way mesh sizes work. How many wire (AWG) or holes (Mesh) per inch. Smaller number = bigger wire / bigger hole
