(Warning: Long post. I talk a lot when I'm excitied about something!)

Hey guys! My name is Desire' (Dez-o-ray), and both me and my husband and our DS (2 years) bought our first house last fall in Big Bend. Low and behold, we can not own ANYTHING in this village, despite us being surrounded by Vernon which is full out farm country. It's depressing really. HOWEVER, I am pursuing going to medical school (one day) and when I finish my current bach degree, we plan on moving to our own little hobby farm. (That is, if things ever look up for us. We are hitting hard times right now) We are both in love with the idea of not supporting the horrid feed lot industrys. However, being college student age we can not afford all that nice "organic" (if it is what it is) stuff. So, why not grow our own?

Right now, we have a garden with: Heirloom tomatoes (black krim, lemon boy, green stripe zebra and san marzano paste toms), green bell peppers, red bell peppers, japs, banana peppers, habenero peppers (DH loves peppers...), pablano peppers, acorn squash, fennel, strawberries, golden raspberries, blueberries, rhubarb, cucumbers, some out of control sage, green pole beans, yellow pole beans, eggplant, fairy tale eggplant, ichiban eggplant, tomatillo, Asparagus, Grapes (seedless edibles, not wine), a pear tree, and elderberry bushes, a crazy herb pot (which has rosemary, italian parsley, thyme, oregano, basil), and another pot (containing apple mint and tri-colored sage...I kinda hope the mint chokes out the sage, as I have a lot of sage...but it's holding it's own!)

Man that's a lot when I list it out like that...

Our fall garden will contain: watermeleon radish, patty pan squash, arugula, broccoli rhab, rainbow chard, yard long beans (this may go in earlier) annnd, I think that's it.

We also plan on adding in some brewing hops plants (as DH brews his own micro, which i'm told is very tastey)

We grow purely organic. Do compost, don't spray for bugs, even with organic spray (altho we need to spray the pear tree...) We are in love with our little garden, and take good pride in watching everything grow and being able to eat really fresh healthy things!

From this love, we want to expand to other edibles. We want to own chickens(keep around some layers, raise meaties for butcher purposes), ducks (for eggs and meat), goats (DH wants a fainting one to keep himself entertained, but all I really want is goat milk!), sheep (for lamb mostly) and we plan on only housing a piglet until butcher, and same with calves. We don't plan on keeping them around long term and mess with breeding and all that jazz.

We don't plan on making this a business, just a hobby and just to feed my family healthy, wonderful homeraised meat. Our BIL and SIL are also reaching for better ways to eat meat and support the local farmers. We should be going in together this fall on a 1/2 angus.

We plan to just start with chickens...and add on and we see fit.

(Really sorry I rambled this long, I just am so excitied about it and need to channel it elsewhere!)

Oh, and a picture of me and DH:
