@babsbag - yeah I never heard of the 8 weeks thing either ... I agree so many differences... even among vets.... I guess that is why I have so many vets... really none seem to agree on anything. Yet they are all good vets.
I missed the "anti" toxin part... :p

So far it has worked for us... never had a kid die or adult die of any of these issues...

It is like the testing stuff here... where in Europe they are MUCH more concerned about issues than we are here. Read info here and it comes across as No Biggy... and that just isn't so.. $$$$ is the driver here.

LOL I just read an article stating 12 Boer goats on an acre should do just fine. Maybe for 6 months... at least here in the humid NC!
Maybe they meant 1 acre of dry lot with hay and feed up off the ground.:p

I think it is good for all the new goat owners to see different management styles... there really is no ONE WAY fits it all.
Like you mentioned @babsbag you can get away with a 2x tear overhaul of your barns... but you have completely different weather and the goats are rarely in the barn... here in NC RAIN all fall/winter... no way could we only clean 2x year... Goats live in the barn practically all fall winter if it is a bad rain year... that is a weekly thing here... if not then at the very longest you could let it go would be 1x month. And that would be gross.

For all of us we learned what worked for us and our farm... sometimes one thing will work but change will be necessary when you double or triple or quadruple your herd.

Hopefully this has helped the poster and not brought confusion. :)

I am NOT doubling my herd, I am not, I am not...I refuse. :hide And if I triple or quadruple just take me away to the funny farm.

My goats really don't have a "barn". They have a shelter with a roof and two sides and I just keep adding straw bedding as needed in the winter. I clean it out by tractor in the spring and last year didn't even do that as I didn't add more than two bales of straw all winter...drought was good for something. This year I didn't clean it as they are supposed to move to the new barn. Just add more straw until then...they sleep there at night and eat, all day they are elsewhere if it isn't raining.

Welcome from Ohio! Your goats are very pretty, and as you've already found out, there's plenty of experienced and helpful folks here :) Looking forward to the little ones in the spring.

A great big South Carolina welcome!!! :frow:wootSounds like you're off to a great start. Your girls are GORGEOUS. Twins and triplets are the norm with the little gals, so good luck in March. As far as the breeder saying they usually have does, does he realize that the buck determines gender, just like with people? Henry VIII never knew and blamed his poor wives, but in this day and age I thought everyone knew! Still, if you're doing goats primarily for milk, does are great!!! (obviously)

@Latestarter said: You are sooo right!!! AND hilarious!!!
Thank you. :)

So.. My girls are not from a breeder, but a seller on craigslist. I will look into labs to get them tested. I sent a fecal sample off to the lab tonight. So fingers crossed. Can we purchase vaccinations or do we get them through the vet? What is the probiotic opinion? Where do we find supplies? Thank you all!!!
