Why are you thinking of not keeping them?

They are cute. I realize that cuteness isn't a reason for keeping them but they look healthy and everything.

Becasue the Brown one is a bad boy and gets out and runs around ALL DAY :)
We tried to keep him and his buddy next door alone but they didn't care about the hot wired fence ,because they wanted to be with the ladies. BUT my girls are a mini something nigi or pygmy and the other is a 6mos old Boer-alpine nubian cross, I don't want her pregnant.
I wanted all the meat goat people to tell if it's worth raising them?
I figured the only way to keep my boer buck is to find him a nice lady friend. So he won't breed my minis.
WE got them for free though, meat goats are what we wanted to do later but now I am not so sure I want that responseability. sorry ranting I know . Pictures gave me so much trouble.

lol....Those boys will jump fence for your mini does if they're in heat, regardless of if they have a pasture full of big does of their own.
A female of their own kind will make no difference, they'll kill themselves to get to ANY does, and your mini does will try to get to them, as well....

No offense meant with this statement, but why do you think they were free? You get what you pay for.

If you're wanting them to breed, getting a buck (or two) before you have does to use them on....is a little odd. Why put up with the smell / aggravation?

And...it takes just as much to feed a 'free' goat as it does to feed a 'good' goat....why dump feed into something who may create inferior, weak, or un-milky (or meaty) offspring?

The brown boy looks more Toggenburg than alpine to me, but the pic is small.
Looks like the boer boy may be a tad overweight and do his hooves need trimmed? He might be a tad down in the pasturns as well, not something I'd recommend breeding for.

The buck you use can be more important than the does. His genetics will show in every kid you produce. Why bother breeding if you're not going to use the best you can?

Again, I don't mean to sound snooty or hurt your feelings, I'm just answering your questions the best I can...to me, if you haven't got anything to breed them to now, and have no idea what kinds of kids they'll make, no...don't keep them.

If you don't need them and they're causing you trouble, it's really a no brainer. At that point, all that's missing from the pic is a livestock trailer and a guy with a hotshot.

Nothing against the bucks, per se.. I just wouldn't keep one if I didn't have to.. I certainly wouldn't keep TWO if I didn't have to.. And if I had two that I didn't need which actually caused me grief....well, your pic might only be missing a sharp knife and some butcher's paper.

 :gig

Wow you forgot one ,rude.
I know that you have high dollar pedigreed goats but some people just don't. I have seen alot of people who mix breed there goats.
My boer does look terrible in my pic, But he is not overweight and I did trim his hooves and the "pasturns" term you talked about. I looked it up and nope doesn't have that either. As I said I wanted meat goats I just wasn't expecting to get a buck before the doe.
As for them being a hassle what goats aren't at times.
The brown one just may be toggenburg .
so if you butcher a buck don't you have to castrate him first?

For the record, not all of our goats are 'high dollar pedigreed' goats, but the ones that aren't.... are either great milkers or produce big, meaty kids...therefore they improve the gene pool, they aren't just bred b/c they can be.

And I purposely cross-breed many of my goats, BUT...I do it for a reason.

I'm sorry you thought I was being rude. You asked, and I gave you my honest answer....and apologized in advance if you took umbrage to it.

I guess I should have said, "Oh, no, they look great and you should use them every time." as opposed to trying to explain that just because an animal is fertile, that doesn't mean it should be used for breeding.

I guess I was hoping you had some idea on their breeding history...do their kids stand on good legs? Are they sound? Good udders...?

My bad...

Also, the "why do you think they're free" was in reference to them being escape artists, meaning they gave them away for a reason...probably b/c their previous owners were tired of trying to keep them in.

All I am sayin is you did seem a little on the sassy side as resposes go. I want people to be honest but not act mean about it.
As for the breeding just because you can ,I am not one of those type people but your seem to assume that I am.
I will say thanks to you for the " Pasterns" reference because It gave me something learn about.
Thats what I am doing on here is trying to get information.
I guess I need to post better questions next time.

I hope that wasn't directed at me, since A) I was kidding, B) I said "nothing against the bucks per se" and meant it, C) I don't have high dollar pedigreed goats, and D) I'm on record -- many times -- as saying I much prefer hybrids to purebreds.

I'm seriously of the opinion these days that the only good reason to keep a purebred goat is so you can use it to make hybrid goats..

I just wouldn't keep bucks if I didn't absolutely have to.. But that's just me, ya know? To each their own. So long as it doesn't cause an animal to suffer for its owner's bad decisions, I'm cool with whatever.

No cmjusto I wasn't talkin about you.
I was feelin a little over protective I guess. I need to be more open to comments if I ask for them . I am not a professional goat keeper so until I am I will be a bit more open to suggestions.
Well I have decided to send these boys on there way and I am going to work towards mini's instead. You know I wouildn't have been so snappy if they said oh yah those are cute but I wouldn't breed them because of blah blah balh. :)
But that's me being too sensitive soo anyways yes I think hybrids are a great thing too. Can't wait my little pygmy Grace is due in a few days and I am soo flippin nervous that's another reason they need to go I am scared they will hurt the baby.
I won't be getting any other Boy goats until I have a MAXIMUM
Security prison for them to stay in.
