We're looking to get our first horse. I'm looking for a very hardy horse, but also one who will be sure footed in the mountains. We live in the foothills of the Rocky's in a hilly wooded area. What breed would work well in a rugged mountain area?

Thanks, Sonja

Well most any breed of horse can be fine in rough terrain (hilly, rocky, etc), but some of the best would be your big-muscled breeds, or ones that are known to be sturdy. Maybe a QH, or something of the like (Paint or Appy). But, on the other hand, I have a Standardbred gelding who is just as sure-footed as they come. So, really, it just depends on the horse. It would be best to be able to "try out a horse" before you actually buy it.

What are your previous experiences with horses?

Some people like gaited breeds for mountain riding: Tennessee Walkers, Rocky Mountain Horses, Missouri Fox Trotters, etc...

Most horse breeds like Quarter Horses, Arabs, Morgans and Appaloosas are pretty hard in addition to the breeds above. Arabs especialy are noted for tough feet.

Thank you for your advice. I've ridden Arabs, Appys, mustangs, and QHs. I just want to make sure we'll find a breed that can live and ride on a mountainous property. We have a few "flat" areas, but there are lots of rocks. I don't want to injure a horse because of where we live. I need to make sure it's sure footed and hardy. I do want to try before I buy and get all of the necessary checks.

The breed itself usually isn't the issue but if it is trained on the terrain. So try and find one that have been trained and worked on the terrain you want to ride on.
