We are over run with a horde of mormon crickets 😬 The house we live in used to be the old ranch cookhouse. It was built by a bunch of ranchhands out of indigenous rock and concrete 90 years ago and the old doors don’t have a threshold so stuff gets in. Well, my living room is a graveyard of crickets that Fen has captured and tortured. Thankfully, he has a special place where he does the actual interrogations and executions, so they aren’t all over the house.
Yesterday I was sitting in my spot and a dang fly kept molesting me, landing on my arm and face, buzzing off and coming right back. I jokingly said “Fenny kill the fly!” Damn if he didn’t jump up and snatch that sucker right out of the air!!
It was hot and I was all sweaty after chores so I hopped in the shower then put a light maxi dress on. I was dusting off the old treadle and felt something on my back. I pulled the dress out and shook it and decided it was my imagination.A Minute later, I felt something crawling up my rib cage. I whipped the dress off, (guess its a good thing my bro in law didn’t come , after all…) and shook one of those damn crickets out on the floor. I asked Finney to get it, and he complied. I like to think he tortured it a little longer than usual on my behalf.

❤️ Gud boi Fen. I never guessed you would be my personal protection dog.

Health has been crummy lately. Have to take Adderal to stay awake at all cuz the fatigue is overwhelming. I really need to clean Mister’s stall today which means no riding as it will take all my energy to do it and I will have to recover for who knows how long. The Mormon crickets are still swarming. They fly up in my face when walking to the garden. Mister just hates it! Fen has been capturing what he can, there are dead bodies alk over the living room I have to clean up everyday, but there are hundreds if millions of them. I appreciate his efforts though. Hero dog.

Another trip to town for Dr Tues, so I will likely miss another 1-3 day’s getting over that. I used to be so strong, and get so much done in a day. This getting old and being sick is a dumb way to finish the race.
So grateful for Fen. He’s not only good company (when he wants to be) but he’s also a huge help. I still have a lot to teach him before he can do all that Heath did, but for a baby dog, he’s learned a lot. I need more energy to train him though. He gives the BEST hugs! He just melts all over you and he doesn’t mind being hugged and squeezed like most dogs.
I’m on the list for an Anatolian puppy in the fall. The trick will be getting him here from Colorado. Don’t think I can make the drive. Might have to ship him, which is kind of scary to me. But I’ll figure it out when the time comes I suppose.
The garden is producing a ton of sumner squash. I need to freeze some, the rest we don’t use go to the cows and the compost. Tomatoes are growing but far from ripe, there are a couple of cucumbers, the beans are flowering, so there’s that. Putting greenhouse in for next year and will get a jump on things because there won’t be a damn pig living in my garden! 😳

Chicks will arrive in a week. I need to fix up a place for them. I used the rabbits cages last time but they are occupied. Need to find a water trough and still need to clean and disinfect the coop.

It needs repairs done before TheMan gets his hip replaced. The apricot tree will need cutting back as it’s grown over the top of the run. So much work to do and no one to help. Damn his lazy brother 😳

Back in the day, my oldest son would have rushed to help us but since he married, he doesn’t even speak to us. I miss him a ton. We used to be so close. But at least he’s happy, so there’s that.

Today was a MUCH better day! Went riding again. Was hoping to make it to the creek or the pond but the boys bottomed out too early. Fen was hot and Mister was dragging his nose in the dirt on the way home. I, however, could have kept going. It felt so good ❤️ Mentally and physically, it’s the best thing I can be doing.
While I was leading Mister to the corral, Fen gathered all the leppie calves and put them in the alley. I was shocked at how slick and quietly he did it, with no training. There’s no substitute for good breeding. He has several competitive herding champions in his pedigree.
Dr appt in town tomorrow. I’d rather be riding…

The pain and tiredness you deal with is enough to get anybody down-even you. You are my hero. Such an adventurer all your life, fearless and free. Your body fails you, but you don’t quit.
I’m glad you have Fen to help you and keep you amused. Getting to go ride brought your spirits back up. Freedom!
