So yeah - what is the harness for??? Tie out????
If he wants to be with the birds he's guarding I don't see a problem. Unless he "snacks" on them, but that would be a different issue.
I've trained a lot of dogs (though not an LGD) and see people looking for the "magic tool" -- find something, it works for a bit, then the dog figures it out and it doesn't work anymore. I know people with boxes of "magic" tools
Agree with SageHill. He is trying to protect bird flock - his current herd of animals. You are tryong to terain him differently.
Once the Anatoloan has established a predator pattern on his property, it will protect the area aswell as the flock/herd. Since Pooch doesn't have enough birds to make protecting difficult he has time to check on you and watch what you are doing. If he can be back to the birds quickly then no harm no foul. He is still doing his job.
Getting an Anatolian to break off chasing a predator will be impossible. He will chase until he thinks they are far enough away not to be a threat. If he can't get the threat to move that far away, he will kill the predator. If he is chasing livestock, that is a different matter. Tying him up will not help since he will be worried that he can't move around freely to protect the perimeters of what he is guarding. LGDs are not obedience dogs.
One of the reasons he still wants to follow you everywhere is because you TOOK HIM EVERYWHERE with you when he was smaller... he still has YOU as part of what he needs to guard and he has put you at the top of his priority list... if you aren't around, then he goes over to the chicken area and guards them. Do you think that he will roam much with you being so far away from the other neighbors? Can you not leave him loose there while you are there?
And if you were to go for a harness for any kind of tie out, walking him anywhere, go with the biggest size... most can be adjusted down... he is NOT done growing yet... can't make it bigger if he gets too big for it.
You are very talented with what you know and can do with metal, among many other things. Sure wish you had a shop close by here... so much stuff we could get done... although we probably couldn't afford you !!!!!! But there would be plenty to keep you busy during your down time...
Which means we would never get anything done since you would be so busy doing other jobs.
Talent means costs... but we are not rich and although you would be a big help on putting up the poles and such to extend the hay barn, setting the rafters and all that... it is still more than we could pay out of pocket too. All our farm work is paid cash money out of our incomes so has to be carefully considered.
I am not saying you are not worth every penny you charge... we just don't make that kind of money to be able to pay for your talent. I also think about the talents you have with engines and such... instead of taking the tractors to other mechanics to get work done, you could do it here at the farm.... Oh well, we will keep dreaming.
I agree with having 3 or 5 locals at $10/hr... which they all want $20/hr here or more... is more costly than having 1 at 50 that can do the work... thing is we cannot even find the 1 at $50 that does what they say...
And I am getting too much older to be able to do the heavy physical stuff I did 20 years ago working with DS . My less than reliably stable knees, and shoulder now hurting so much, and limits on some things make me much less nimble and helpful... and too many of these yahoos think their time is worth so much money and they cannot think things through to do things right anyway. So, I do as much as I can and what I can do... and it takes me more time to do alot of it... but slow and steady is what makes me still feel useful and contributing... I sure wish I could some of the more physical stuff.
The machinery rates are not out of line... but the problem is so many that want those rates here, also do a half assed job at stuff and you pay through the nose to weed out the incompetents... and the ones that are good at what they do and can "do it" ... are so far booked up that sometimes you have to go with "less than" because it has to get done now....
Our co-op gets $70/hr for the mechanical work they do... they are generous with what "time" they charge for... but I have NO COMPLAINTS for what I pay for what they do for me.
