I’m so sorry for your loss. Sometimes freak things happen that we never expected. :hugs
Pure Chinese gosling, first of the year to hatch, more coming in 13 days
Youngfarmer, what day did your gosling hatch on? Have you hatched goslings other years too? I just wasted an hour combing BYC to find out how long Chinese goose eggs incubate for. All I could find is that different breeds of geese hatch between 28 and 35 days, but nothing specifically about Chinese geese.

In prior years I have had no luck getting any goslings to hatch in my incubator, so I don’t have experience with what day they hatch on. Now I have a new incubator with a better goose egg turner, so I’m hoping for better results.

What day do your goslings usually hatch, and what day do you do lockdown?

I hatched 3 goose eggs last year. I found the same knowledge on BYC, 28-35 days, so I really didn't know what my lockdown date should be. One person on BYC said a couple days before hatch date, but how am I supposed to know if they could hatch anytime in a week's span (28-35 days)?? So I put them on lockdown around day 28 and the one gosling ended up hatching on day 31. Last year I started lockdown on day 27 and they hatched on day 29 but I was dealing with a different breed (chinese/toulouse cross) Here's a couple of last years babies...

Well, thank you. You have confirmed what I was thinking I would do. Lockdown on day 28, and hope they don’t go all the way to day 35.

Thought I’d do a quick little update.
3 goslings have internally pipped, on their way to hatching, unsure of breed.
Trimmed Olive’s long, shaggy hair and treated the herd for lice.
Starting dewormer on entire herd tomorrow.
And I want yalls opinion on this buck, might purchase him, purebred ND but not registered, hidden moon spots, homozygous for blue eyes, EVERY kid he has sired has blue eyes and moon spots. He costs $200, I will be studding him out to other farms if I do purchase him.

(First pics are of olive mid trim, not finished yet. second is the buck in question)

Do you have other horned goats in your herd? Just wondering if his horns will be a problem. I don’t have goats, and I only know what I’ve read on the forum. They say horned goats bully non-horned goats, and they get their horns stuck in fences. Those horns are so big, maybe they couldn’t even get into a fence? 🤔 I’m probably wrong about that. 😅

But boy, he sure is absolutely gorgeous! 😍

I use no climb horse fence for all pastures, I can’t even fit three fingers thru a hole, so getting his head stuck shouldn’t be a problem. My other buck is horned but I dehorned the rest of them. The bucks will live together and only be reintroduced during the time I want to breed.

He is gorgeous, I was hoping he’s throw some color for me and other farms around me. There’s only one other ND stud around here and his stud fee is outrageous.
