No new babies so far today. The ewes are all being fat slugs.

I’ve been watching Ida from the camera at work and one minute she looks like she’s working on something and the next she’s chewing her cud or has her face shoved into the feeder.

Leroy has been driving everyone nuts again today. He keeps escaping the stall (to loud protests from mom) and has been bopping all over the barn pestering the other ewes.

Finna gave me a pretty black girl this afternoon! She was “due” on Thursday, but I’m thankful she waited until today when I was home because her baby was coming out tail first and she never would have gotten her out.

She’s probably going to turn silver as the tip of her tail is already gray.

Wow! I’m so glad you were there! That would have been heartbreaking.

Bad weather and a bad lambing.

We’ve had high winds all day. Lots of trees down.

Valerie went into labor after I left for work this afternoon. I kept an eye on her via the cameras, but I wasn’t happy with how she was progressing. And then we lost power so I couldn’t watch her at all. My kind BIL went to check on her and called to say that he couldn’t feel a lamb and he thought she might be prolapsing or something. The picture he sent showed placenta, not a prolapse.

The situation was beyond my BIL’s skill level so I left work and ran home. No trees on the road on my way, but the gusts of wind almost blew me off the road.

At this point I assumed the lamb was dead and that Valerie was at risk of dying/needing to be put down.

I was able to find and get the lamb out fairly quickly and, surprisingly, he was still alive. He’s not going to live long though. He some deformities including a severe cleft palate that mean he won’t be able to eat. He’s not going to be able to stand or walk either.

Valerie seems to be fine. There was no excessive bleeding and she got right up and started cleaning her baby. I left them together and went back to work. I’m sure he’ll be gone by the time I get home again, but at least Valerie will have been able to get used to the idea. She’s a very attentive mother and this is her last baby as she’s 11yo.

I did take some pictures of the lamb that I may post later.

We still have no power and the power company is saying that we probably won’t get our power back until 3/6.

I’m sorry about the lamb. That’s too bad, but at least you saved the ewe.
No power until the 6th? That’s 3 days! Hope you can keep your freezer frozen.

We got power back briefly a little while ago. My BIL ran out and got a generator so we can move my freezer to his garage if we need to.
