@fuzzi ; Realize all the trucks on the farm are 20-30 yrs old.... and all are paid for. We don't get rid of them, we fix/repair/rebuild them.... and when one goes down like the one bale truck with the radiator and all that, we have something else that we can use to feed with, or pull a trailer with....The automatic one had the problem with the bale bed that I went and had to help DS lift the 2 arms to get them up so he could take it to a friend's to get the "ears" on the cylinder rewelded when they broke... we were without any trucks to feed with for 2 days... and it is miles to go to take the tractor to 2 places... got to have backups when you have the number of cattle and places we have to go to.....

@Baymule , glad that your 6.0 is doing good for you.....

I like older cars, fewer bells & whistles. My current bunch are a 2000 Camry (180k), 2006 Accord (330k), and my new baby, a 2007 Highlander Hybrid (260k). We would have kept our 1987 Mitsubishi pickup truck (toy!) but my dh has never fixed cars, so we had to rely on a mechanic. The original parts were wearing out, one by one, and were expensive to replace.

My Subaru forester is a 2000, my outback is a 2001, the 2wd ranger p.u. is a 94? the 4x4 ranger is in the 80's... the explorer is 2012 and I don't like it (another of my parents vehicles we bought from the estate)

New engine and trans in the forester... $6,000 +/-... and newer engine in the outback $4000 (87,000 miles from wrecked car) ... both installed with guarantees from the mechanic . That was what the cost of some used vehicles were and no telling what "quirks" they had, so I had mine fixed. Figure they will last me the rest of my life.... probably....

I see the white trim on some of the piggies. Trademark of Berkshires, out to make some good pork. Dont throw away the fat! Render it down and can it in quart jars. Great for cooking and makes best pie crust ever.

How long will the fat last in a jar on the shelf? I guess the jar will be steralised, and once opened, it will last a while in the fridge?

I have quart jars from 2020. Perfectly Good. Once opened, I keep in refrigerator.

Me too. Hey, lard was used to preserve in years back! Mine was heat sealed in mason jars when rendered.

I have a friend who was very poor as a child. Her dad slaughtered a hog and made sausage. To preserve it, he cooked the sausage patties and layered them in a crock. He poured melted lard over each layer until the crock was filled with cooked sausage patties. Sealed top with melted lard and they took them off layer by layer, recooked in a skillet and breakfast was ready.

I bought my 2004 Lariat when I worked as a sales person at a Ford dealership. I got it at invoice, plus a no interest sale. I surprised BJ with it and he was delighted. Who wouldn’t be? He mostly drove it to work, 3 miles away. I used it to go get feed and hay. HE was hard on everything he/we had. I took care of everything he/we had. Somehow the truck survived him, the other trucks we had didn’t fare so well. BJ had 2 speeds, wide open and asleep.

We got a spare engine/transmission for the wife’s ‘02 Outback, plus I can rebuild engines transmissions so we are covered there. The suspension gets eaten up out here with CV axles. As great as having an old car, time is limited on parts.

Welp today marks a year we have lived upstairs in the “Pole Bindominium” without windows and we haven’t went insane yet, doesn’t bother us either. I believe itis the fact once we go out the door in the morning we never come back till dark anyways so no need for windows. It’s as once the doors are closed downstairs and we go upstairs and close the door all the schit from the world is outside with it’s own little world up there.
One can only hear the rain if it’s torrential and that’s from the roof outside the living quarters. Other than that, it‘s silent till the winds hit 40 plus mph.
