Baycox was developed as a treatment for cocci, not as a preventative. The positive attribute is that it kills ALL stages of the cocci with only one dose, although another dose may be given when the goat is known to have lots of cocci. However, it's not a magic bullet--if you are using it as a...
Hello and welcome as additions to the ever-growing group of Texans. We are not too far away in Salado. Did exactly as you are ... spent weekends/holidays on the farm until finally getting to make the big move. The transition from city slickers to country folks was so easy, and we have...
Just can't get it through my head and heart that I can't keep them ALL. We love every one of our new babies, but these two bucklings born in April (2013 kidding season--one brown and the black one on the left) will have to find new homes. Hubby says "we have enough bucks", and he's right...
The decision is NOT can you treat the goat...you indeed can do that. You MUST quarantine the goat and get your formalin...the formalin proces is not that difficult and does work. However, the decision is can you keep the remainder of your goats healthy? You will always have to watch for an...
Hello Texas--Where are you located? We have a Nubian herd in Salado. As of this weekend kidding season is over and all are well and happy. Most hay in our area is fertilized in the spring. Just ask and when you find "good stuff" buy a supply. And, thanks to our alkaline soil, we have...
I use Ivomec Pour On with great success as a pour on. Goats have thinner skin than cows and some worry about irritation, but no problem noted here. Using 1 cc per 22#. It is so easy, and very low cost for me as I just swipe it from hubby's cow med cabinet.
Goats have absesses for lots of reasons. Take a deep breath, it will most likely be something else other than CL. But, do not take a chance. Find a way to have it tested! Meanwhile, keep all of the bacteria in the goat -- do not poke and puncture. Might consider confining the goat in a...
It is my understanding that goats have a difficult time maintaining their body temperature when wet. Being wet in the cool weather would be difficult and probably bring on the sniffles. Doesn't have to be an elaborate shelter, but should keep the rain drops at bay--How about a tent for now...
Guess I prefer natural whenever possible...my goats LOVE a hand full of salty corn chips with Gatorade for electrolytes. You have to provide the "treat" for all because they will fight for it. As for replacing good bacteria, ours love yogurt so they enjoy a big bowl every now and then.
Have you tried Ivomec Pour-On? Since it got at problems I seemed unable to solve, I've become a big fan. And, it's sooo easy. Also gets at external parasites and, in your situation, may reduce hatching worms in areas of your bedding/barn/pasture where the goats congregate. Just a thought.
My windows are covered in "expanded metal" panels purchased at a big box store. They are course mesh-like sheets of metal and quite sturdy; never a problem.
My goats really like home mix! Only one problem encountered: when the Texas temp stayed well above 100 degrees this summer, oodles of bugs hatched in my grain bin (metal garbage can with tight lid). The mix contains all the different whole grains I can find; they especially love oats--also add...
You can research the many different goat breeds on the internet. I would recommend getting a copy of Storey's Guide to Raising Dairy Goats. The book is full of valuable information and will answer most of your questions. It is readily available at Tractor Supply or can be ordered from lots of...
Though dogs within the same breed exhibit differing personalities, trust is the primary issue. I would always worry about what might be "bred-in". As house dogs we have terriers...the can be fiesty so don't leave the fenced dog yard and are never allowed in the pastures. I am sure there are...
I've been there; CL is a nusiance that I never want to deal with again. Had CL absesses pop up on not one, but two healthy does while they were nursing kids. Pregnancy and nursing probably lowered their bodies' ability to fight it. The key is not to let any of the exudate contaminate your...
I keep on hand a spray bottle of water mixed with a little molasses for stick-em. Very lightly mist any food and then sprinkle on the powder. The powder will stick and nobody will know the difference--my goats particularly like spritzed Fritoes. Caution: be sure to use a very light mist on...
OK, here's what I do for scours in adults after letting the problem persist for 24 hours to clear the system of something eaten. Let the goat enjoy a hand full of Fritoes (about 2X/day) with Gatorade. That goat will love you! Of course, you will have to share Fritoes with the others because...
While we are on the topic of disbudding and there are lots of experienced responders, my husband and I are going to take on that job in the spring. Easy to say...probably not so easy to do. What is the diameter/size of the tip that you use? I'm thinking the 1/2" would be the way to go for...
When I got my first two goats, the seller was well into her 90s and had had goats for her entire life. I knew NOTHING. She told me that daily maintenance should include 6 things...a good grain once or twice a day, free choice quality hay, pasture grazing whenever possible, access to goat...
