for those of you who feed round bales.....

I have goats, but also paint gelding, so am reading and learning what I can. I have a neighbor that buys large round bales in the fall for the winter and covers it until she feeds it. She covers the open bale with plastic and ties the plastic over it. She then "spoons" the hay over into a...

    Nubians...Climately challenged?

I am in NW North Dakota--last winter we had -40 weather with 35 mph winds. Every 4 years or so, it is colder and in mid April this spring, we still had the horse next door walk over their fence, across the short tree row and right over the fence into our pasture.--that was mid April, thats how...

    Goats/Sheep

I am going to copper bolus them this once anyway- I follow some of the goat guru's. people that have goats, are willing to share their knowledge and keep in touch with goat programs through major vet universities. I know that my problem is with the mineral that I was able to get here...

Outside pen size vs. indoor housing size

mine have never "eaten" or chewed on tarps used. But I would really use pallets as a base. T posts do work, but when goats rub on the walls of the panels, they can push them out of wack. also, if you use the pallets for a base, the cattle panels can be cut in half to be used as the top half...

    Goats/Sheep

You could copper bolus the goats, but if it were me, I would not mix them. we are looking at sheep and fiber goats again, but everything will be separate. I would like angora rabbits again also, but my daughters say NO WAY IN H**L are we getting angora rabbits again:(. So I guess we will...

Pygoras? Anyone raise them? What are they used for?

I am looking at them also--Pygmies can have the cashmere gene--as I understand it. I had 30 angoras and a handful of cashmeres at one time-I am looking now-but I want CAE and CL tested goats as I don't want to deal with changing clothes, and boots, etc. Also the pygoras keep their nice...

Outside pen size vs. indoor housing size

Hoop houses are wonderful--we use them up here and they work well. We start with a pallet base and put the cattle panels inside the pallets. 12 x 12 is good or 12 x 16 works. if you put up a wood half circle at the back and frame up a door in the front-- also see if you can get a used pool...

    what kind of goat milk?

I have had various breeds for milk drinking, I happen to like my Nubian and Mini Nubian milk-I also have heard that Toggs have stronger milk. I do know that how the milk is handled and how quickly it is chilled makes a big differnce. I sterilize everything we use for milking and wash hands...

    my pygmy is sick?

I'm sorry :(, there are so many variables and a real learning process. I have a notebook and write everything down-all the details-and what was done. Then if anything happens again, you can look at it on paper. It could have been coccidiosis--or an overload of worms. It is very difficult...

LaMancha crosses....what happens with the ears?

I have heard either "gopher" or "elf" ears for purebred LaManchas. I think that only one type of ear is desired on the bucks-but I don't know which one it is. I don't how it would work with crosses. i would like to see some pictures also. :)

    New to site and pygmies!

You are in Penn right? Do you get snow? My goats will go out in the snow IF they want to, but if they want to stay in, they stay in. I feel that you will need hay to feed them in the winter. Windy, cold weather is not good for goats. I would put a pen around the shelter for them, I also...

New to goats, will she always be this way?

I tethered goats before I knew what could happen--before I knew what could happen, I will never tether a goat again! Bad news waiting to happen. I also don't mean to sound harsh or mean, but from experience--I will NEVER tether a goat again. JMO--tragic things can happen.
